  1. "There is only one garden (Eden), and we must all labour in it sharing ALL its' fruits," sayeth the duck.

"All private gardens are a SIN"!

  2. No fences! Internationalize your garden so that ALL may harvest what individuals plant.

  3. That may be CANARDO's Ideal Goal, Thersites, but it most definitely is not what this, short, quasi-religious, exhortative, secular anthem that serves as the Finale to Bernstein's Candide would like us to take away from the experience.

I have vivid memories by the way of the VICTORY GARDEN my father planted, and tended lovingly for three seasons. We had a very large yard -- an acre and a half. There were eight apple trees at the "bottom" of the garden. Most of the rest of the yard was plowed up and Dad grew vegetables like you wouldn't believe. Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, Eggplant, Carrots, Radishes, Onions, Scallions, Corn and PEAS. He even grew purely decorative Gourds, Marigolds, Zinnias and Morning Glories just to please my mother. It was gorgeous. And he DID it as a rising young executive on a large corporation who commuted into New York every day and took frequent flights all over the country for his work. Where he got the energy from I can't imagine, but people really WERE different back then.

We had FAITH and HOPE in the future, and a determination to be POSITIVE and CHEERFUL really did prevail. I was there. I remember.

  4. Lovely!

As you know, FT, I resist many vocal music of high-brow genres.

However, I do enjoy many operettas.

What is expressed in this piece is worthy as well.

    Nice Sunday post.

  5. Whether you want to "make your garden grow" and enjoy the fruits of your labor from your "victory garden" you'll need to spare the time and effort. That may be a simple moral lesson that was easy to understand at one time in our past, but seems to be buried beneath the weeds most people perceive in our world today.

Of course, there's no shortage of experts touting some simple solutions to regain what seems to be swirling around the at the drain today.

I came across this documentary, Four Horsemen, which discusses the foundations of our world historically as it has devolved to our current state. I didn't find it particularly politically biased in discussing the social political and economic problems of the day, while pointing to some radical alternatives as solutions that in some respects are touted by both ends of the political spectrum: Sound monetary system based upon a value based currency (gold), abolishing central banking (the FED), allowing personal debtors to write off personal debt in the old currency and starting with a clean slate in the new financial world, taxing mineral wealth and replacing income tax with a VAT, and as a sop to Marxists the ownership of the means of production (factories) in the hands of the workers. Maybe that would work but the status quo of today's vested interests in the financial system would likely go to war against these ideas.

  6. :P

The vested interests would most CERTAINLY go to war against all of the above.

Some of them will rise from the ashes, though.
